What is Perioperative Medicine?
Perioperative medicine emphasises the importance of an integrated, planned, and personalised approach to patient care before, during, and after any surgical procedure involving anaesthesia. The goal of a comprehensive medical assessment is to reduce postoperative complications, duration of inpatient hospital stay and early re-admissions following surgery. Overall, the goal is to improve the patient experience of surgery and post-operative recovery, and assist you to regain a better quality of life.
Your physician will:
Perform a risk and needs assessment.
Co-ordinate preoperative optimisation.
Prevent and manage any postoperative medical complications.
Support your functional recovery in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team including nurses and allied health professionals (e.g physiotherapists).
Your physician will also assess all aspects of your medical history, including:
Cardiovascular risk (Ischaemic Heart Disease / Heart Failure)
Pulmonary / lung disease
Anaemia
Thromboprophylaxis (blood clot prevention)
Obesity and sleep-disordered breathing
Diabetes and other endocrine disorders
Renal disease
Pain management
Your physician will work as part of your treatment team alongside your surgeon, anaesthetist, general practitioner and other applicable specialists, to identify and mitigate risks in the lead up to surgery, during surgery and in your recovery phase.
