Rheumatology

What is a rheumatologist?

A rheumatologist is a medical specialist who assesses, diagnoses and manages diseases of the muscles, joints and bones. This includes conditions, such as:

  • Inflammatory arthritis - rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Gout

  • Chronic back and neck pain

  • Osteoporosis

  • Tendonitis, bursitis and muscle injuries

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Polymyalgia Rheumatica / Giant Cell Arteritis

In addition to these conditions, a rheumatologist can be a part of a clinical team managing complex inflammatory disorders, such as:

  • Connective tissue disease - including systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma

  • Myositis (muscle inflammation)

  • Small vessel vasculitis

  • Auto-inflammatory disorders

Many inflammatory disorders of joints can also affect other areas of the body, including skin, gut, eyes and lungs. A rheumatologist will work with you to identify symptoms or signs beyond the joints that may be related to your arthritis.

Advances in medical science over the years have led to a greater understanding of how aberrations in the immune system can result in joint pain and stiffness. Many inflammatory disorders are now treatable with a tailored medication regimen. An Articulated Health specialist will work with you, your general practitioner and other health care providers to ensure that you receive comprehensive and coordinated care. At Articulated Health this includes advice regarding medicine and lifestyle factors to improve your quality of life.
